New Counters for Chesapeake Kitchens and Baths
Countertops in Chesapeake homes take a lot of use: humid summers, busy families, and in many households a move every few years. We install quartz, granite, quartzite, marble and outdoor countertops across the city, from South Norfolk and Western Branch to Great Bridge, Greenbrier, Deep Creek and Hickory. Most homeowners shopping for new counters want one of two things: a durable kitchen surface they will not have to think about, or an update that helps a house sell or rent. Quartz covers the first need for most people, granite is close behind, and both do the second well.
Quartz first, granite close behind
Engineered quartz is crushed natural quartz bound with resin and pigment into slabs. It does not need sealing, the color is consistent from slab to slab, and it resists stains better than most natural stone. Angi's 2026 cost guide puts quartz material at $50 to $200 per square foot, with most projects at $70 to $100, plus $10 to $30 per square foot for installation. Granite is quarried stone, so every slab is different. It handles heat better than quartz and needs occasional sealing. Angi lists most granite projects at $2,000 to $4,000, with slab granite at $40 to $60 per square foot on average and up to $100 for rarer stone. Quartzite and marble cost more and ask more of the owner, but nothing else looks quite like them.
What humid coastal air means for counters
Chesapeake has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and about 48 inches of rain a year. Stone does not mind humidity, but what sits under it does. Particleboard sink bases swell when a slow leak goes unnoticed, and a swollen cabinet can push a slab out of level or open a seam. On every job we check the sink base and the cabinet tops for water damage before we template. For natural stone near the sink, sealing on schedule keeps water and cooking oils from soaking in and darkening the stone.
Military moves, selling and renting
Hampton Roads has the largest concentration of military bases of any metro area in the world, and nearly one-fourth of the nation's active-duty personnel are stationed here. Chesapeake itself has Navy sites at Northwest Annex and NALF Fentress. Plenty of homes in the region are sold or rented ahead of a PCS move. For a rental, we usually point owners to a mid-range quartz in a neutral color: it shrugs off stains, needs no sealing between tenants, and photographs cleanly for a listing. If you have a report date, tell us at the estimate so we can work backward from it.
A city that grew fast after 1963
Chesapeake was formed in 1963 when the city of South Norfolk merged with what remained of Norfolk County. The population went from 51,612 in 1960 to 89,580 in 1970 and 249,422 at the 2020 census. That growth means the housing stock spans six decades: 1960s and 1970s ranches with original laminate, 1990s builder-grade kitchens with tile or entry-level granite, and newer homes with stock quartz. Older kitchens often have walls and cabinets that are out of square, which is one reason we template on site rather than ordering to a tape measurement.
Permits for plumbing and electrical changes
Swapping countertops on existing cabinets is generally treated as cosmetic work. Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building Code exempts installing or replacing cabinetry and replacing plumbing fixtures when the water supply and drain systems are not altered. The code does not list countertops by name, so the city's building official has the final say. Moving a sink, adding a prep sink or an ice maker line, or adding new wiring and circuits for an island is different: the code requires permits for work on water supply, drain and vent systems and for electric wiring. If your plan moves plumbing or adds circuits, we build the permit and the licensed trade work into the schedule before your slab is cut. Confirm specifics for your address with the City of Chesapeake's permits office.

Common Questions
How much do new countertops cost in Chesapeake?
Angi's 2026 figures put an average quartz project at about $4,500 (range $1,000 to $12,000) and most granite projects at $2,000 to $4,000. HomeGuide lists an average 30 to 40 square foot kitchen at $1,500 to $8,000 in quartz and $2,400 to $6,000 in granite. Edge profile, cutouts, removal and any plumbing work change the total. We give you a written price after measuring.
Is quartz or granite better for a Virginia kitchen?
Both work well. Quartz needs no sealing and resists stains, which suits busy kitchens and rentals. Granite handles hot pans better and every slab is unique, but it should be sealed periodically. In a humid climate the bigger issue is a dry, level cabinet base under either one.
What are some popular brands of quartz countertops?
Widely sold brands include Caesarstone, Silestone, Cambria, MSI Q and Hanstone. Brands differ in color range, slab size and warranty terms. Caesarstone's residential warranty, for example, covers indoor installations only and requires work by one of its certified fabricators, so ask about warranty terms when you pick a color.
What are manufactured countertops?
Manufactured, or engineered, countertops are made rather than quarried. Engineered quartz combines crushed quartz with resin; solid surface (such as Corian) is acrylic or polyester resin; laminate is a plastic layer over particleboard. Granite, quartzite and marble are natural stone cut from quarried blocks.
Can you order countertops online?
You can order prefab vanity tops and laminate online, but a stone kitchen top has to be templated to your actual cabinets and walls. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, and an online order based on a tape measurement can leave gaps or a top that does not fit. Stone also needs careful transport and handling to avoid cracks.
Do I need a permit to replace countertops in Chesapeake?
Often not for a like-for-like replacement on existing cabinets, though the code does not name countertops specifically. Virginia's statewide building code exempts cabinetry and replacing plumbing fixtures without altering supply or drain lines. Moving a sink or adding circuits requires permits. Confirm with the City of Chesapeake's permits office for your project.
How long does a countertop replacement take?
There are two visits after the estimate: templating and installation, with fabrication in between. Install day for a typical kitchen is usually a single day. If plumbing has to move or permits are needed, that adds time, which we lay out in the quote.

Where We Work
Chesapeake is home base, and at 351 square miles it is the second-largest city in Virginia by land area, so it covers a lot of ground on its own: South Norfolk, Western Branch, Deep Creek, Great Bridge, Greenbrier, Hickory and the rural south toward the North Carolina line. We also work in the neighboring South Hampton Roads cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk; on the Peninsula in Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Yorktown and Williamsburg; west toward Smithfield, Carrollton, Windsor and Franklin; and just over the North Carolina line in Moyock, Currituck, Camden and Elizabeth City. Housing ages differ from one area to the next, from postwar homes near the Elizabeth River to subdivisions built in the last few years, and that changes what we find when the old counters come off. Each area page covers what is specific to that place.
